Sonya Garcia was born and raised in South Valley Albuquerque, New Mexico, Where she began her dancing career. There her love of dance launched with Ballet Folkorico at the age of 3. While learning in a private dance studio in the south valley, she obtained the knowledge of Ballet Folklorico, Jazz and Hip Hop. At the age of 9 she began assisting in children’s classes. At 12 she was an assistant coach for (competition winning) Barcelona Elementary School as well as expanding her career in competition at Elite Dance & Theatre. In 1996-1999 she was the Co-captain/Captain for the Rio Grande High School Castenettes Dance Team. In 2000 she became a volunteer at Keshet Center for the Arts. Eventually becoming staff and assisting the director in multiple productions. Sonya lengthened her career by teaching Ballet, Creative Movement, Hip Hop, Jazz, Zumba and Adaptive Classes. She has been involved with Albuquerque’s Dance Community for over 30 years. Sonya has worked in many Nonprofits for 15+ years. Her vision for the dance community is to expand on the culture, inclusion and education through Multicultural Dance and art.
