Working Classroom celebrates our 25th anniversary with the August 10th opening of Dreamlandia, a bold re-telling of the Spanish classic, Life Is A Dream by Calderon de la Barca, written by Octavio Solis and directed by Monica Sanchez. Set in the borderlands between Mexico and Texas where narcotics, NAFTA, immigration, family, cultural and sexual identities collide. Solis’ tragicomedy unfolds through flights of lyrical brilliance and brutal realism.
Dreamlandia director Monica Sanchez wrote and directed Working Classroom’s inaugural production in 1988. After a twenty-year California-based career working with many nationally prominent theater companies, several network television series and many films, Sanchez recently returned to Albuquerque as Working Classroom’s Artistic Director. The cast includes veterans and newer members of Working Classroom’s award-winning ensemble theater company, including WC alumni Gabriela Mayorga and Richard McClarkin, who both began their acting careers in the 1999 production of No Swamp Like Home, also written and directed by Monica Sanchez; current WC acting students Elijah Bradford, Andy Chavez, Raul Antonio Granillo and Kethzia Sanchez and several local actors whom we welcome to Working Classroom’s Ensemble Theater Company.
