Karl Orozco, Guest Artist, is an interdisciplinary artist and educator based in Queens, NY. Orozco uses narrative to challenge assumed notions of race, family, migration, and power. Orozco works to complicate ties between the hospitality industry and the Filipinx diaspora by highlighting quiet acts of home making. Orozco is currently exhibiting “Come You Back to Maynila Bay,” a community engagement printmaking project that uses hand-carved mahjong tiles to retell stories of his grandmother’s Manila gambling parlor and promote Filipino cultural literacy. He is the 2018 National Artist-in-Residence at the Neon Museum in Las Vegas, NV where he leads inter-generational mahjong playing-and-printmaking workshops with local community groups.
