Working Classroom After-School Workshops

These workshops will be held at WORKING CLASSROOM
423 Atlantic SW, Albuquerque, NM

 

PUBLIC ART PROJECTS

 

Internship: Gateway Park Sculpture Project

Together, for six weeks, we will gather the raw materials for a sculpture project that represents- through audio interviews, photography and sculpture- the residents of Albuquerque’s South Valley neighborhoods. After selecting and interviewing participants we will prepare several maquettes of the final project along with additional audio recordings and photographic portraits. We will present our work to the Bernalillo County Arts Board at their August meeting!

Prerequisites: By Application with Preference toward high school aged artists with previous Working Classroom experience.

 

Mural Apprenticeship

The 2017 mural team will create a mural on the west facade of Working Classroom’s Youth Art Center at 423 Atlantic Ave. SW, in Albuquerque, with guest artist Lenny Correa AKA Layqa Nuna Yawar. Lenny is a migrant latinx artist, large-scale muralist, agitator, educator and organizer born in Ecuador and based out of Newark, NJ. His large scale projects confront injustice, racism, and xenophobia, while celebrating cross-cultural identity and migration in order to amplify the silenced narratives of people of color around the Americas and the world. 

July 10 – July 28

Prerequisites: by Application (Due 06/22/17) with Preference toward middle and high school aged artists with previous Working Classroom experience. 

 

VISUAL ART

 

Painting and Drawing Intensive

Students will learn painting techniques and team-building skills necessary for working on a project team. Students will be lead by local artist and educator Al Na’ir Lara. Students who complete this intensive will be eligible and encouraged to apply for the Mural Apprenticeship.

NEW MEDIA

 

The Neighborhood Project

Photojournalist Adria Malcolm leads a team of young photographers in creating work that thoughtfully captures the vibrant character and voices of a neighborhood. Students will be exploring the Barelas community through interview and portraiture of the residents.

THEATER

 

Intensive: Theater of the Oppressed

Students learn to utilize theater techniques for social change. Learn to explore, show, analyse and transform the reality we live in through games and ensemble created performance.
