Working Classroom presents the world premiere of Highway 47, an often funny, ultimately heartbreaking story of a land grant, a church and a resilient Hispanic community. Based on interviews and historical documents, Highway 47 is a testament to the malleability of history, the thickness of blood, the conceit of ownership and the power of cultural identity.Written and directed by Tome native KJ Sanchez and Working Classroom's award-winning ensemble theater company. For over 250 years Tome, New Mexico was defined and ultimately divided by the communally owned Merced (land grant) and the highway that cut through it. Based on interviews with residents and historical documents, this visually dynamic play explores the life of a community recovering from a devastating land feud, remembering its traditions and struggling to survive as a bedroom community in the shadows of the State's largest City.
